DBSA Albuquerque is having its first group outing for 2013. We’ll be meeting at the Cinemark Movies 8 on San Mateo Blvd. north of Montgomery to see the Oscar winning film ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’

Silver Linings Playbook synopsis:

Life doesn’t always go according to plan… Pat Solitano has lost everything – his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother and father after spending eight months in a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat’s parents want is for him to get back on his feet – and to share their family’s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives.

After a long and enjoyable stay at Trinity United Methodist Church, DBSA Albuquerque has made the decision to move to a new home on the Central New Mexico Community College campus.

The new facility for our weekly support groups is located near the intersection of Buena Vista Drive SE and Coal Avenue SE. Buena Vista Dr is found between Yale to the east and University to the west.

823 Buena Vista Dr SE
Albuqueruqe, NM 87106

At the intersection of Buena Vista and Coal, turn south on Buena Vista. You will see basketball courts on the right side of the street (west). Immediately after the basketball courts is an adobe-style one story building. This is where we will be meeting.

Park on the south side of the building. Entrance to our new meeting hall is on the Buena Vista side of the building (east). There is a central courtyard where we will be meeting before groups. The building is ADA compliant.

The parking area is well-lit, and the parking area is monitored 24 hours by both campus security patrols and a system of video cameras. There are three lighted emergency towers in the immediate vicinity that connect directly to the CNM Security Department dispatch. The CNM Security Department has been advised of our scheduled meeting day and time, letting us know that their response time is less than three minutes.

CNM Security Department Information

The 16/18 Broadway/University/Gibson Bus Route has service to the University/Coal intersection, on the west side of the CNM Campus. This is the closest bus route to the new facility.

16/18 Broadway/University/Gibson Route and Schedule

We will be meeting at the same day and time.

Support groups every Thursday unless otherwise noted.
Doors open at 6:30 PM.
Announcements and Groups begin at 7:00 PM.
Groups will end at 8:30 PM.

We will have a facility host who will let members in and out if arriving late or leaving early. Jordan is our host so be sure to say “hi” to him on the way in.

Thanks for your continued support of your peers and DBSA Albuquerque. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the new facility!

DBSA Albuquerque was invited to take part in the Behavioral Health Day at the Capitol Building (The Rotunda) in Santa Fe this week. We set up a booth where we shared DBSA’s purpose of providing a forum for those with depression and bipolar disorder (and other behavioral and mood disorders) to share their feelings, thoughts, and experiences with each other for mutual support in recovery and wellness.

We met with other behavioral and mental health organizations and agencies from around the state, and we learned quite a bit that will help the participants in DBSA Albuquerque with information and services. We were also able to meet with several members of the New Mexico State legislature, new contacts for our chapter that will allow our chapter to be better informed in legislature and policy that affects our lives and treatment. We’ve been invited to advise the legislature with our experiences, direct feedback from our community.

Many thanks go to Valerie Quintana and those on the Behavioral Health Day board who invited us to participate this year. It was a great experience that we hope to take part in again next year.

DBSA Albuquerque is having its first activity in many months, a short hike of Rinconada Canyon in Petroglyph National Monument on the Westside of Albuquerque.

The desert flora and fauna in the canyon are very interesting, as well as the geology and especially the prehistoric rock carvings.

There is an audio tour you can enjoy via your mobile phone. The phone number will be provided at the parking lot, as I don’t recall it right now and don’t have time until tomorrow to look for the scrap of paper it’s written upon.

I’ll also be able to give some information on the prehistoric culture of the area as well as the interesting geology that made this archaeological site possible.

There is an established trail in the canyon (I helped to survey and design the trail as a volunteer to the National Monument, so I can attest to not being able to get lost).

Where: Rinconada Canyon, Petroglyph National Monument, at the intersection of Unser and St. Joseph. Meet at parking lot.

What: Hike of trail to view prehistoric rock carvings and enjoy the flora, fauna, and geology of the canyon.

When: Meeting at 1:30 pm, Saturday, November 10, 2012. Plan to start hike by 1:45.

It’s a good idea to bring water with you, even with the weather turning cooler. I will be taking the hike regardless of weather, so there will be at least one person there if you can’t decide to go because of weather.

This is an unimproved trail, which means it is not paved. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. There are hardpack parts of the trail, rocky parts of the trail, and sandy parts of the trail.

Layering is a good way to prepare for changes in the weather. It may start warm and you feel comfortable in a T-shirt, but the weather may change rapidly. Having something warm to wear over your shirt is a good idea, too. A brimmed hat will keep the sun off your face, and will help to keep your head covered in the case of rain. Sunscreen is recommended if the weather is sunny.

That all sounds like this trek is a little dangerous, but these are merely precautions to make your hike more pleasurable. The Rinconada Canyon trail is very easy and for the most part flat with a few very small hills. It is the most popular hike in the National Monument.

Getting to the trailhead is easy. It is on the west side of Albuquereque. Traveling from either the north or south on Unser, you will see the National Monument parking lot on the west side of Unser at the intersection with St. Joseph. Unser Blvd. is one exit west of Coors Blvd. on I-40 (exit 154). The trailhead and parking lot are north of Interstate 40.

We hope to see you there!

If you have any questions, you can contact Steve at 505 514 6750 or info@dbsq4albq.org.
